Researchers from the University of British Columbia have claimed that Psychology's view of human nature is highly distorted because most research is carried out in WIERD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich and Democratic) societies. The researchers also claim that the psychological tendencies of people from these countries are highly unusual compared to the global population.
A new study from UCLA has found an association between the number of friends a child has at school and academic achievement. Those with more in-school friends than out-of-school friends obtained higher grades.

Smoking In Pregnancy Linked to Aggressive Children

Smoking during pregnancy leads to aggression in children, according to a new study published in the journal Development and Psychopathology. After taking into account other factors that also increased aggressive behaviour, such as low income and mothers with a history of antisocial behaviour, smoking was still found to be an aggravating factor.

Ditch the Atkins Diet, It's Exam Time

Low carbohydrate diets, like the Atkins diet may have a negative effect on exam preparation and performance, according to a new study. Professors, Holly A. Taylor and Robin Kanarek along with former undergraduate Kara Watts and research associate Kristen D'Anci found that compared with participants who reduced calorie intake but still consumed carbohydrates, participants who dieted by cutting out carbohydrates performed worse on tasks involving memory.
