Schizophrenia Subtypes May Be Removed From DSM-5

The proposed changes to the APA's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for classifying mental illness include the removal of the 5 schizophrenia subtypes currently listed in DSM IV.

The current version, DSM IV-TR, lists five schizophrenia subtypes: Paranoid Type, Disorganised Type, Catatonic Type, Undifferentiated Type and Residual type. The proposed removal of these subtypes is because they are not considered useful for clinical or research purposes. The new DSM may include dimensional assessments which would allow clinicians to evaluate the severity of symptoms instead.

The APA are also re-evaluating whether to include criterion B (social and occupational dysfunction) - should the impact on a person's life be part of the diagnosis?
